Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is a state in South Asia, on the eponymous island near of the Southeast coast of Hindustan. From the time of the Portuguese invasion and until independence the country was called Ceylon. Translated from Sanskrit "Sri Lanka" means "glorious, blessed land."
The island is washed by the Indian ocean and the Bay of Bengal, it is separated from Hindustan by Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.
